Mexico is a large Spanish-speaking country in North America. It borders the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, between the US and Belize, and borders the Pacific Ocean, between Guatemala and the US. Mexico is a federal republic consisting of thirty-one states with a combined population of more than 100 million. Historically, Mexico is the site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, including the Aztecs and Mayans. The area fell under the domination of Spain from the 16th to the 19th century, after which Mexico achieved its current independence. Modern Mexico is a place of many extremes, it is the simultaneous host of a beautiful landscape, a multibillion dollar tourism industry, and a center for illegal drug production and distribution.
